Lung Function Testing

Respiratory health surveillance is a programme of regular, periodic, spirometry, or lung function testing, that is related to the substances that are used in a regular working environment. Health surveillance helps prevent  asthma developing by detecting the early signs of the disease at a stage where it can be reversed or its effects minimised.

Respiratory health surveillance is required for individuals who are exposed to substances and processes where occupational asthma is a known problem. We use Lung Function Testing/ Spirometry Test to measure how well the lungs work, and with this test we can see if any problems are developing;  such as shortness of breath, asthma and COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease)

The test measures how much air we can inhale and exhale. It also measures how fast we can blow air out. When I carry out a lung function test I undertake two types of test:

  • VC (Vital Capacity) this measures the amount of air you can breathe out after taking your deepest breath

  • FVC (Forced Vital Capacity) measures the amount of air you can exhale with a force after taking your deepest breath

Once the subject has performed the test I can compare with any previous results before referring it on to an Occupational Health Adviser to give the appropriate guidance and advice to ensure the well being of the employee.
